William Apes was aboard a whaling shp headed for NEW ZEALAND, where he settled and married Mata Punahere in the 1840's; and they, together had many children--one being my great grandfather, Tiemi Apes, whom had my grandfather, Oscar Apes, his sister Daisy and another son who stayed in the South Island. My grandfather changed his surname to EPPS..... There is a road named Apes Road in Karitane, Otago, and William Apes is buried in Karitane, Otago as well.
